January 29, 2025
Whatcom Volleyball was back in the NWAC North Region playoffs this fall. Head Coach Cody Luthy has prepared his team well for several years, but he is becoming more and more reliant on his assistants to help take the Orcas to the next level.
Megan Miller has been involved with Whatcom Volleyball team since she joined the team during the 2020-21 season. She entered during one of the teams most difficult seasons during the COVID pandemic. Miller used the time to develop strong ties to the program, staff, culture, and the school, and it ended up making a lasting impression. Coach Luthy then asked here to join as a coach the following season and she chose to stay to pursue her coaching career at home. Miller said, "I wanted to give back to a program that had such a positive impact on me."
Miller said that she loves the opportunity to work with the incredible student-athletes they recruit, relating, "They bring so much energy, passion, and drive to the program, and I enjoy seeing their growth on and off the court." Megan feels that she is very excited about the recruiting process as we head into the 2025 season. She says that she, "hopes to continue recruiting culture creators and well-rounded student-athletes who align with our program's values. My ultimate goal is to foster an environment where the team thrives collectively while achieving both personal and program milestones. The team has signed a few that show great promise."
Megan was asked what one of her favorite games as a student-athlete and as a coach. She recalled one of her favorite games is playing a home game against Bellevue. It was a memorable experience because it highlighted the camaraderie and competitiveness of our team. As a coach, she also has favorite memories. During the 2024 season, she remembers preseason games against Lower Columbia and Yakima Valley at the CBC Tournament. Megan discussed how, "these games set the tone for her team and demonstrated the potential we could build on throughout the season as we headed towards the playoffs this year."
Having been with the team for years now, she is looking to grow as a coach and person. Miller said, "I'm currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Sports Psychology and Kinesiology at Western Washington University. I'm grateful for the mentorship of Cody Luthy (Head Coach), who has been instrumental in shaping my coaching philosophy and instilling strong practices in our staff. Growth is a continuous journey, and I strive to keep learning and improving every day."
Coach Luthy has seen Megan grow over the years saying, "Megan's passion for volleyball has been evident since she was 13, and it has only grown stronger through high school and college, and now was a member of our staff at Whatcom. She goes above and beyond in every way, truly investing in our athletes and fostering the strong, positive culture we have today. Her ability to connect with players is unmatched, making her an invaluable part of our program."
More questions were asked later in the interview (maybe a little more fun):
If you could make the ultimate sandwich, what would be on it?
I'm a fan of hot sandwiches, so I'd go for something like a classic French dip with roast beef, melted cheese, carmelized onions, and a side of au jus for dipping.
What do you like to do outside of volleyball?
I enjoy watching new movies or TV shows with friends and family, exploring new restaurants, and traveling. Whether its a short day trip or a week-long adventure, I love discovering new places. Music is also a big part of my downtime--it helps me relax and recharge.
What cartoon do you relate to the most and why?
I relate to the Powerpuff Girls in different ways. Bubbles represents joy and energy, Buttercup embodies boldness and resilience, and Blossom symbolizes leadership. Growing up, my sisters and I admired the Powderpuff Girls because they inspired confidence and showed up what it means to be strong and empowered.
