Orcas Basketball Starts the NWAC North Region Season.
The Men's and Women's Basketball teams got underway on Wednesday, January 8th in their first league games of the 2024-25 season. Both teams grew during the non-league season but they appear ready for the fourteen game NWAC North region slate.
Bellingham, WA. - The Men's team started the NWAC North Season in the right way with a win over Peninsula College at the Pavilion (Student Recreation Center).
Whatcom (1-0 league, 4-12 overall) won 85-76 in a close contest. Hayden Creswell hit five three-point shots to score 26 points overall. Luke Guzman had 13 rebounds to lead the team, offensively Guzman had 20 points.
Glenn Wabaluku had five points and eight rebounds during the win. Wabaluku said, "We are stepping in the right direction. We are going to keep after the league. We are doing what we need to compete now. The
Whatcom community helps us along the way. We are motivated as they consistently come to support us."
The Women's team struggled in their first game against #3 ranked Peninsula College. The team knows that they have a good team, and that they will be ready for the next league games.
Summer Hullinger led the way for the Orcas with 14 points, and she led the team with seven rebounds. Whatcom's womens team is 0-1 in league, 5-9 overall.
There are several upcoming special events at our games during the league season. This Wednesday, January 15th, we will be hosting Lunar New Year with the ASWCC Asian Student Union.
Free pizza will be available to students while it lasts. Tip off for the Women's game is at 5:00 p.m.
The events continue into February. Youth Night and the first WCC Sport Card Show (giveaways for kids and anyone under 17 years old and younger is free.) is scheduled for Saturday, February 8th. On Wednesday, February 19th the basketball teams will coordinate with the
Black Student Union night to hold a Black History Celebration Night starting with the Women's game at 5:00 p.m. vs. Edmonds Tritons.
The final league game will be with Skagit Valley College Cardinals on Saturday, February 22nd at 2:00 p.m.. The event will be Orcas sophomore night. It will also be a Associated Student and Intercultural Night Leadership celebration for student leaders on campus.
Both teams are looking to be one of the four teams in the region that make the playoffs that start the first week of March 2025 in Pasco, WA. at Columbia Basin College.
