Season Preview: MBB Head Coach Damek Mitchell
The Orcas opened their season last night at Highline College in Des Moines, WA. Whatcom fell 80-72 in a non-league game. The Orcas will continue their season on Friday, Nov. 21st vs. Centralia C.C. in Auburn, WA. at 4 p.m. next week. With the start of basketball season, student reporter Javi Moreno was able to catch up with first year head coach, Damek Mitchell
How has the early season been going so far for you and the team?
The preseason has been going really well. It's been a great journey so far as we've started to establish who we are and what our identity will be. The focus right now is on discipline, culture, and conditioning, making sure we're laying the right foundation both mentally and physically.
What's it like stepping into your first season as head coach at Whatcom?
It's been exciting stepping into my first season as head coach. Of course, there are challenges, especially getting everyone to fully buy into what we're teaching as a coaching staff but that's the beauty of it. Adversity is part of the process, and trusting that process is something I emphasize every day.
What lessons from your own playing or coaching career are you bringing into this new role?
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is the importance of how you respond to adversity. It's not about what happens to you, but how you react to it. I also stress discipline and fundamentals; those two things separate good teams from great ones. And finally, I carry with me the belief that respect is earned. That mindset has shaped how I coach and lead.
What kind of culture are you trying to build within the program?
We are building a relationship-based culture, not a transactional one. It's about connection, accountability, and genuine respect for one another. We want our program to feel like a family, a place where players grow not just as athletes, but as men and leaders. Development, both on and off the court, is a core value for us.
What do you think will be key to having a successful season this year?
Success this season will come down to staying healthy, being disciplined, and understanding why we win or lose. If our guys can consistently execute their roles, stay connected, and learn from each moment, we'll put ourselves in a great position to compete at a high level.
Looking ahead, what's your long-term vision for Men's Whatcom basketball?
My long-term vision is to build a program that the entire community can rally around, a packed gym, local kids dreaming of wearing a Whatcom jersey, and a standard of excellence that lasts. Ultimately, I want to lead this program to a championship and leave a legacy that goes beyond basketball.
