Damek Mitchell- Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Damek Mitchell returns to his hometown region as Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the Orcas at Whatcom Community College, bringing the full arc of his playing and coaching resume—from standout student-athlete to international professional to proven developer of young talent.

Playing Career

Coach Mitchell’s basketball journey began at Squalicum High School in Bellingham, Washington, where he starred as a four-year varsity player and capped his prep career as league MVP, leading his school in scoring, rebounds and assists while setting enduring school records.

He went on to a decorated athletic career at Lewis-Clark State College, where he rewrote the record books: he set the institution’s career three-point field goals made and assists marks, and earned multiple Player of the Year honors, Defensive Player of the Year, and three-time NAIA All-American recognition. His tenure included a Final Four appearance, a 29-3 season, and a berth in the national championship game.

Following college, Mitchell played professionally in Portugal for Academica EFAPEL in Coimbra, where he averaged strong numbers in scoring, rebounding and assists, maintaining his all-around game at the next level.

Coaching & Leadership

Mitchell has steadily built a coaching profile rooted in player development, culture-building and relationships. After returning to his alma mater, he served three seasons as assistant coach at Squalicum High School, applying his playing experience to mentor student-athletes in academics, character and on-court performance.

He then founded and directed Team 360 Hoops, an elite youth AAU program based in Whatcom County. Under his leadership the program has placed more than 20 athletes into collegiate basketball programs in just three years—demonstrating his skill in identifying talent, developing players, and navigating the recruiting landscape.

In 2023, Mitchell joined the Orcas’ men’s basketball program as assistant coach, before being elevated to Head Coach. With deep local roots, firsthand experience playing and coaching at multiple levels, and a proven track record of elevating young athletes, he is uniquely positioned to lead the team forward.

Coaching Philosophy & Vision

Coach Mitchell holds the guiding conviction that excellence begins off the court: success is built on values, culture, accountability, and character. He aims to create a program where every athlete understands that effort, preparation and teamwork are non-negotiables. With a rich background as a student-athlete and coach, he emphasizes holistic development—academics, life skills, and preparing for life beyond basketball.
