Whatcom Soccer Teams Off to a Tremendous Start
The Whatcom Orcas have returned from the NWAC Soccer Friendlies in Salem, OR, with strong momentum. The Women’s team is undefeated at 3-0, including two wins at the Friendlies, while the Men’s team stands at 3-1 after closing out the second day of the event with back-to-back victories after a loss on the opening day to Columbia Basin College.
Head coach Jason Jorgensen, who leads both squads, praised the growing chemistry between the teams.
"There is a growing bonding experience happening with both teams," Jorgensen said. "The Men's and Women's teams are getting along well, and they're cheering for each other. They're working together as one group."
The shared team motto this season is "Service Above Self," which Jorgensen noted was evident both on and off the field during their trip.
On the pitch, both teams are showing steady progress. The Women's side has yet to concede a goal this season, while the Men's team improved after splitting into two groups on the second day of the Friendlies.
"It was nice to watch them grow independently, but still support each other," Jorgensen added.
Off the field, team camaraderie shone through as players bonded over a lively karaoke contest on the bus ride home—Men vs. Women. Jorgenson emphasized the importance of strong leadership from both the coaching staff and team captains.
For the Men's team, captains are sophomores Roberto Guzman, Brandon Caro, and Jordan Johnson. The Women's team is led by Noreen Weber and Emilee Swanson.
"We have an excellent group of captains in 2025," Jorgensen said. "They're setting the tone for what we want to accomplish."
The Orcas now turn their attention to upcoming non-league action with a home doubleheader against the Walla Walla Warriors on Thursday, Sept. 4. The Men's match kicks off at 11 a.m., with the Women's match at 1:15 p.m. at Orca Field.
These games will be the final tune-ups before NWAC North Region play begins Sept. 10 vs. Shoreline at Orca Field.
