Season Preview: WBB Head Coach Ken McLendon
The Orcas start their season on Saturday, Nov. 15th vs. Green River College in Auburn, WA. The Whatcom Women's team will host on Tuesday, Nov. 25th just before Thanksgiving break vs. Wenatchee Valley Community College. Game time is 6 p.m.
What's been the focus of your practices leading up to the season so far?
Our focus has been on establishing winning habits, efficiency, and consistency. A few months ago, most of us were total strangers. So, we have spent time getting to know each other through the process of learning our system and improving our skill set.
What are some areas you still want to see improvement in before the first game?
We just need to get healthy. Right now, we need to find ways to build team chemistry and culture, as we integrate and reintegrate players onto the team. Fortunately, we have high-character young women who show up with great effort every practice.
What challenges do you anticipate facing this season, and how are you preparing for them?
We'll be battling through inexperience all season — myself included, as this is my first-year coaching at the college level. Combine that with a roster made up mostly of freshmen, and you can expect some growing pains along the way.
What's your coaching philosophy on and off the court?
Our five core values are Honesty, Humility, Loyalty, Responsibility, and Commitment. We believe that when these principles are applied consistently in every area of life, success becomes inevitable.
What goals have you and your team set for this season- both short term and long term?
We simply want to make daily improvements, to continue to think and execute at a high level. We believe that doing this while applying our core values will lead to sustainable success.
What kind of impact do you hope Whatcom Women's basketball has on the campus and community?
I want our players to embrace leadership in every area of their lives. I want our style of play to be inspirational and our actions on and off the court to inspire greatness in others.
Stay tuned in for upcoming games and theme nights throughout the season! The team is excited about hosting the Whatcom C.C. Crossover Tournament in the Pavilion starting Dec. 12th, 2025.
